Wireless Radio Disabled on Cold Boot of MC3100 Series

After a cold boot of your Motorola / Symbol MC3100 series device, if you find that your wireless radio is disabled, create the following .reg file and add it to the \Application folder on the device;

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\WLAN]
"InitialState"=dword:00000000

One day, you never know, Motorola might actually start putting this sort of stuff into their documentation. :\

Tested as working on MC3190 device.

      Hopefully anyone with a MC9190 and the same problem will find this page. I lost a lot of time until I found the solution to this, too! Very frustrating!

  5. Hi SADAKU,

    To keep the WiFi profile you have setup on the device after the cold boot, you will need to create a registry file for the connection.

    To do this, set up your connection using the Wireless Settings as normal then when you have completed this, long press the connection and select the "Export" option to save a registry file with your settings into the "\Application" folder.

    Hope this helps,
    Will

  7. Hi Omar,

    What device are you using and what do you mean by "log file"? This is a registry file, not a log file.

    Thanks,
    Will

    1. Hi Mohamed,

      Depends on the version of Windows CE you are using. Take a look at this blog entry about run files, those are better suited than the registry for starting applications:

    3. Hi Mohamed,

      Not tried to skip it myself. Suspect it's Windows related rather than Motorola. Our users tend to press escape on that screen!

  9. I have a Motorola MK3190 kiosk with similar problem, WiFi is always disabled after a cold boot. I added a .reg file in the \Application folder on the device with the following:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\WLAN]
    "InitialState"=dword:00000000

    However, WiFi is still deactivated after a cold boot. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Mark,

      The device you mention is a Windows CE 7 device, not sure this registry entry is valid for that OS.

      Are your wireless profiles still there after cold boot or is the device losing those, too? When you say deactivated, what are the exact symptoms you are seeing?

      Regards,
      Will

    1. Hi Pedro,

      Not sure what you mean "loses the IP" - do you mean it disconnects from WiFi after being connected? Does the IP not survive a cold boot?

      Regards,
      Will

  11. Hi will, since 4 days, i'm looking for a solution about how to forward data (tags readen) from my Motorola / Symbol MC3100 device to my computer as a .xls or .csv or .txt file.

    I tried to connect via wifi (don't know the importance of this feature except connection on internet) but it's still impossible for me. I created the .reg file you gave and charged it in :/application file on the device by bluetooth from my computer but no way to work.

    The second point isn't most important than the first one.

    Please help me. Thanks in advance.

  12. Hello.

    I have a different problem reported here, when you cold boot is losing your IP settings and disabling wifi.

    After running the reg file, stopped disable wifi after startup, but still losing IP settings, you know what might be happening?

  13. Hi Leonardo,

    When you setup the wifi, did you long press the profile and click the "Export.." option? If not, do that and save the resulting reg file in the \Application folder and your wifi should persist the cold boot.

    Regards,
    Will

  14. I have a bunch of WinCE5 scanners (Motorola MC9190) that when they have die or from cold boot, the Wireless Radio will not turn back on and has to be manually enabled. how the heck do I edit the registry on there to tell that thing to turn on automagically? some one said "create a reg file" how, there is no registry for me to go to, to do this. what I mean is, can some one break it down nice and simple for my dumb brain to handle

    1. Hello,

      This guide assumes you have a Windows PC:

      You will need a way to transfer files onto the device (ie: you will need a dock and USB cable and software such as ActiveSync to copy files across.

      Open "Notepad" and copy in the following:

      Copy & Paste the text between these lines into Notepad
      ---------------------------
      REGEDIT4

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\WLAN]
      "InitialState"=dword:00000000
      ----------------------------------

      Click save and enter the filename "wireless.reg" and save in a folder you can access easily such as your desktop (important: include the quotes in the file name - Notepad will save the file extension then)

      Click "Explore" in ActiveSync or select the device from your "My Computer" and browse to the "Application" folder.

      Copy the wireless.reg file from your PC to the application folder

      Hold the 1 & 9 keys and simultaneously press the power button - this should force a cold boot and you should be able to see if the WiFi is enabled.

      Remember: This only enables the WiFi card, it does not do the work to save the WiFi details - that's a different thing you need to do by clicking "Export" after you have input your WiFi details

      Regards,
      Will
